CBTA: Better Training or Just a Different Grading System?
CBTA creates value when competency assessment changes training decisions — not when competencies are simply added to the grading form.
A grading scale is not a training philosophy
Competency labels, observable behaviours and a new grading scale can be introduced while the training system itself remains unchanged. CBTA becomes useful when assessment tells the organisation something it can act on.
Data quality starts with instructors
Instructor standardisation, common interpretation of observable behaviours and grading concordance sit at the centre of credible training data. More data is not automatically better data.
Close the feedback loop
Useful data should influence programme design, scenario emphasis, instructor development and individual support. The objective is a disciplined loop: assess, identify patterns, understand causes, adapt training and measure the result.
The management question: What decision did our competency data change in the last training cycle?
